Recently, i had the opportunity to attend eIndia, an Indian ICT event held in New Delhi from 29th - 31st July 2008. The Event was big, rather magnanimous in the way that it had multiple tracks, pertaining to different aspects of 'e'. It had eHealth, eGov, eTelecentre, Digital Learning, etc. The participant turnover clearly highlighted the pervasiveness of 'e' in just about every area of human activity.

Throughout three days ( that i spent at the event), i was in the Digital Learning section, either attending some session or in the exhibitor's area, looking at the products on display. The trends are clearly not very encouraging as far as India is concerned. Whereas, the trend, globally is aligned to evolution that has occured in education because of Internet and Web 2.0, the trends in India are still far far behind the rest of the world. The three major trends that i saw during the event (in the exhibitor's area) are :

Interactive Whiteboard : There were about 10-12, both local and global companies displaying their product, with very little variation or deviation from the other. The Interactive Boards on display ranged from the most basic type (with just a board and marker) to the most sophisticated one ( with tablets, et. al). The Interactive Board revolution is still to catch up in India, as far as effective use of it is concerned. It is more of a fad than a neccessity in majority of the cases.

Ready-made Content : You can never have enough of it (in India at least). Just about every 2nd stall was by some content vendor. Everybody out there to prove that their content is better than the rest. Some have even gone to the extent of creating 'Spectroscopic' stuff and people thronged to these stalls. Globally, the trend, worldwide is changing from e-content (readymade) to e-lesson ( created by teacher itself) and here is the wide range of content to choose from and almost all catering to science. The teachers and schools in Indian scenario are yet to get rid of this complete dependency factor in teachers which is using the readymade stuff as this is what is hindering their evolution as a teacher. Just hoping that things change for the better very soon.

Powerpoint addon : I don't know how to put it but it was an overhyped product which just added some gadget to control the powerpoint responses. There was this presentation and there was this hand-held gadget which could record the responses of the students as each student used it to give response to the query in the powerpoint presentation.God knows when this obsession with powerpoint will end. why can't vendors contribute to bring better products for teachers and help the education process.

The onle way out of all this is a teachers' uprising to say 'no' to all that doesn't do their teaching-learning process any good but just adds to their burden !
NBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11151353248382760452noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3770972586849775105.post-34564746037499341392008-07-06T22:20:00.001-07:002008-07-07T02:19:50.061-07:00LETS BE SELF-RESPONSIBLE....PART 2Some more items that cropped in my mind :

Always Be a Learner : Any profile we work in is nothing but an opportunity to share with others our knowledge, expertise and to learn from what others know. Be it our fellow colleagues, our seniors or our students, we should be open to learning. This is the only way to survive in this information-laden world and society. There is no magic solution to keeping ourselves updated than just being open to learning. Today, one needs to be a 'master of all trades' and human limitations do not permit us to learn all by ourself. We have to derive learning from each of our experience / interaction, etc. Lets perceive others as sources of knowledge and learnings and only then we can be up to date and at par with the rest and the best.

Do it for the students : Any learning for a teacher is of use only when it is used to further the teaching-learning goals. The mere existence of teacher is because of students. The recognition, the accolades, the respect, the awards, etc. that a teacher gets is an outcome of the success that the teacher's students has achieved. A teacher owes a lot to the students. So, align all your actions and motives to how your students could benefit by it. A teacher cannot be expected to teach just for recognition, award or reward. There is a higher goal to be achieved and that is to facilitate learning among students and make them self-sufficient by making them self-learners and life-long learners. Let, each activity of ours be done with a single-minded focus on our students(s).

Apply Multiple Models : Don't stick to just one model of teaching-learning process. There cannot be a single cure for all ailments. The best approach is to adopt a blended model, where you mix the traditional methods with the latest one. As a teacher one never knows what might work with a student. Why, then restrict ourselves to the old way of doing things or to just a single way of doing things. The advancements in technologies definitely have advantages and lets accrue benefits from these advancement.

Well, would have loved to write more on this but would stop hers.
Hope you enjoy reading it !NBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11151353248382760452noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3770972586849775105.post-70727930305707414512008-07-02T21:30:00.000-07:002008-07-03T22:34:33.013-07:00LETS BE SELF-RESPONSIBLE....PART 1
Teaching is not just a profession but a huge responsibility. The responsibility is huge considering that the future of the nation is dependent on the youth, who in turn, are shaped and moulded by teachers. Unless the end product is of good quality, nothing concrete would come out of it.

As teachers, we must stick to the mission and the most basic responsibility bestowed on us i.e., facilitate learning for the students and prepare them for the future. Changing some of our old habits could help us become more meaningful in our profession as teachers and justify the faith society puts in us. Some of those habits are :

Using the same old, mundane teaching-learning techniques and tools : Sticking to the basics of teaching-learning does not mean sticking to the old ways of delivering the teaching-learning process. The new tools and techniques are to ensure that we, teachers become more effective and efficient in our approach and work. It is very easy to keep living in our 'comfort zone' and keep doing the same things the same way. But there is no point in doing so as that will get us the same results and get the students nowhere in this fast changing world where the dynamics change every moment. Lets explore, experiment and innovate to make things better for our future generations because you never know, maybe our kiths and kins might also be the sufferers if things don't change for better.

Self-demeaning mindset and attitude : How many of us feel proud to be a teacher, maybe very few. It is so because we have made it appear so. Forget about the salary or the remuneration part, how many other professionals get this golden opportunity to build the nation through shaping and moulding the 'yet to be youth' population. Let us be proud to be a teacher and do away with this silly mindset where everything gets gauged in monetary terms. Of course, money is important but not a critical element in the life of a teacher. Lets change our outlook and perceive ourself as an important cog in the wheel of our nation's economy. We, teachers, are the shapers and moulders of all these champions that have done the nation and the world proud. Always remember, a student will always be a student to you. The respect a student gives to the teacher is unmatched and incomparable, not even money could match it. Lets deliver with self-pride.

Selecting Teaching as a Profession : This could be explained by the following phrase "Lets become teachers by choice and not by chance". Teaching is a passionate job and unless one has opted for it willingly, there's no point in being a teacher. Why to mess up the careers of so many young children wanting to excel and take the world by storm ? Without passion, things cannot flow from heart or head but just from mouth alone. Lets do justice to the society.

NBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11151353248382760452noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3770972586849775105.post-72777109719441970842008-05-28T03:05:00.000-07:002008-05-28T03:27:05.558-07:00What works best with novice e-teachers ?
After much deliberation, came out with this post where i want to share about what a novice/ upcoming e-teacher should know. While working on CII-Shiksha Project (www.shikshaindia.org), came out with this term e-teacher. A very basic explanation of the term is "any teacher with working knowledge about various useful and appropriate e-tools (electronic-tools) and capable of transacting teaching-learning in a more effective manner".

The effectiveness aspect is brought in by exposing the teachers to a plethora of e-tools. Under the CII-Shiksha E-teaching workshops, a variety of open source / free tools are delivered to teachers. Most of these teachers, being new to the actual concept of e-teaching/ e-learning find hard to cope with the quantity and variety of tools being delivered to them.

It was during one such e-teaching workshop that the idea cropped to make the things/ technology simpler for teachers. Why not deliver small utilities rather than a comprehensive software. Though a comprehensive software may be a good choice in the long run but the first stpes should always be made simpler. After all, teachers need self-confidence to tread further on this road to e-teaching. This idea prompted to replace big and comprehensive softwares like Irfan View with tools like pixresizer or shell extension.

In the first phase, the teachers would be better off being taught/ delivered the easy-to-use and accomplish tools/ utilities and once they get comfortable using it to their advantage, they can move on to playing around with detail/ comprehensive tools.

E-teaching is nothing but "teaching simplified through technology"

NBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11151353248382760452noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3770972586849775105.post-59769993141624578312008-03-27T01:55:00.000-07:002008-04-02T00:02:00.595-07:00Knowledge Overload – Too Much To Handle for Teaches !
I had wanted to write about it for quite some time now. The post came through as a result of my recent interaction with a group. I feel there is too muck knowledge/ information being bombarded on the teachers these days and it is all happening in the name of their development. Be it technology, be is psychology, be it self-management, the teachers have to attend all. I have seen teacher being made to undergo such a rigorous training schedule that it could lead to burn-out in them. All the year through, teachers are busy with their numerous academic and non-academic stuff. The academics get over and the teachers get busy with student examination. The examination gets over and the teachers get busy with paper checking, result preparation, etc. Once this gets over the teachers are put through a series of workshops, trainings to prepare them for the academic session ahead.

Gone are the days when 'teaching' was considered as an art, to be performed with passion. Nowadays, 'teaching' has become 'clinical' in nature. The passion is gone because there is too much on a teachers' plate to handle. Teachers are Humans and not Robots, so why feed them with whatever, in the name of effective teaching/ learning. Like anybody else, a teacher also needs a drive and intrinsic motivation to perform but where do they derive it from, in the midst of all this chaos. Teachers do not get time to dwell and reflect on what they want to improve. The way every child is different, the same way every teacher is different too. Every teacher needs some time and space to do self introspection and identify his/ her areas of improvement. We need to put our faith in teachers because every teacher wants to be an effective one and provide the best learning to the child.
NBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11151353248382760452noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3770972586849775105.post-31798918441322588892008-03-05T21:25:00.000-08:002008-03-05T21:49:45.810-08:00E-Teacher = Learning Facilitator+Technologist
The last 7 years that i have spent in the domain of 'Technology Enabled Edfucation' had helped me know the things better and look at the technology integration process from various perspectives. Since i have always believed in the cause of teacher empowerment, I believe the need of the hour is to create more e-teachers. According to me, we in academia need to focus on smoothening the transition from a teacher to an e-teacher. My definition or philosophy of e-teacher is "a teacher who uses 'e(electronic)' components to good advantage in his/her teaching-learning process". I have always believed that for a teacher/ educator to become an e-teacher/e-educator, there is a need to understand about the process of learning to ensure children learn better and secondly, there is a definite need to know about technologies that could facilitate the learning process. So, to start with, an e-teacher should explore as many e-tools as possible and scrutinise/ analyse them from the perspective of a child/ student. After all, teachers/ educators exists to help children/ students reach their potential and that can happen only when proper learning has occured. In this post, I do not intend to delve too deep into strategies that could facilitate effective learning but would like to stress that let all our e's (used for e-teaching) be foucsed on ensuring an effective learning for children/ student.
NBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11151353248382760452noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3770972586849775105.post-45256489398664692232008-02-28T22:36:00.000-08:002008-03-20T01:08:55.562-07:00Simplifying Technology for Better Technology Adoption and IntegrationAll thorough my 7 years in I.T. enabled education, i have observed that technologies are never delivered simplified to educatore (teachers, in particular). Even a tool/ technology expected to be used by a teacher is delivered in a 'hyped' way. Unless and Until technologies are explained in a simple manner to educatore, we cannot expect an adoption, leave aside easy adoption. A user ( teachers, in this case) should know how to get started with using the tool and that can only occur when users have understood it. So, simplification and not complication should be the key while introducing a new technology. I can relate an example - while conducting a training, i had to introduce 'Learning Objects' to a group of teachers. Rather than giving a technical definition for it, I explained it in a way that they could easily relate to. I told the group that any creation of theirs, be it a presentation, document, spreadsheet, animation, etc. is nothing but a learning object. We need to remember that the adopters need to feel comfortable with anything new being introduced to them. Lets simplify things for the teachers so they can harness the technology tools appropriately for their teaching-learning.NBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11151353248382760452noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3770972586849775105.post-85092991434911051912008-02-14T21:23:00.000-08:002008-02-14T21:42:46.562-08:00Technology Integration - No Stand-Alone ProcessIt's really hard to come back after a hiatus but i had to because one cannot just avoid technology. I am back with an interesting piece of my thoughts on technology integration process. Integrating technolgoy is not about picking a piece of software/ tool and start using it for the sake. what is required is a clear understanding about the purpose that the tool serve and also to use the tool appropriately. many a times the technology integration process fails/ flops because technology is treated as a domain outside our working/ active domain. Technology, as it exists, cannot be effective unless there is a seamless integration with the existing domain. When one sets to use technology in education, it just cannot be picking up a technolgoy piece and starting to use it to do some education related activity. The best way to capitalise on the power of technology is to pick up an activity from your domain and then seek an appropriate technology tool to achieve the desired output.

Also, technology integration is no stand-alone process. There cannot be an effective integration unless some creativity is applied. The creativity lies in identifying how to harness the tool appropriately. Creativity in integrating technology is all about using technology to simplify the things and facilitating the use of the tool to ensure proper usage.

I sense a bit of incoherency in my thoughts as it has been quite a while since i posted. I am sure to improve upon it in my next post.NBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11151353248382760452noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3770972586849775105.post-91530759614178184362007-09-17T22:43:00.000-07:002007-09-17T22:45:23.231-07:00Self Motivation = Inspiration + DesperationThe key to success in any field is to be passionate about our work. Passion can only come when one is self-motivated. Anyone can motivate self for doing anything if one has two key essential ingredients - Inspiration and Desperation.

Inspiration is the ability to provide one with positive stimulus to achieve what one aims for. Inspiration could mean elevating self to achieve the self-desirable. Inspiration could mean
working towarsd a better future.

Desperation, on the other hand could act as a stimulus to rise from a state of despair to a state of success. Desperation could work at improving upon the past.NBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11151353248382760452noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3770972586849775105.post-57858470968477194892007-09-17T01:21:00.000-07:002007-09-17T01:25:43.932-07:00Pedagogy Stricken Education System
Recently, I had a brush with reality where i happened to meet some educationists of our country who are made responsible for shaping the future of so many children of our country who go to the school in the hope of learning something that will transform their lives. It was quite a disappointing interaction with them where all the time they got stuck at the pedagogy aspect. It is high time that these so called 'experts' realise the potential of technology and help the needy reap benefits out of it. As long as there will be anti-technology people managing the teachers' training instutues and schools, technology cannot permate to those who actally can reap benefits by it. Their personal fear or phobia of failing to use technology is what drives and prompts these to behave like that. They may be using mobiles, washing machines, remotes and many other modes of technology tools but when it comes to technology/ teaching-learning, they show reluctance and helplessness to adopt it and also encourage others to use it. These are the people who are a real hindrance in the integration of technology in our education process.

The blackboard has evolved, the chalk has evolved, the classroom has evolved, then why not the teaching-learning aids. We have seen and adopted to the above mentioned evolution without any hassle and major resistance. Did we try to map every evolution that occured to our pedagogy. The answer is 'No'. The strategy has always been to introduce soem variations to adapt to any new technology, tool, aid, etc. If that is the case, then why crib and create a fuss over introducing technology in teaching-learning. Technology definitely brings in effectiveness and efficiency in whatever domain it is used in , so why can't we make our pedagogy principles flexible enough to adopt to these innovations and creations.

Lets not be unjust to our children who are the future of our nation. Let us open them to technology and help them explore, experiment and innovate. Let them shape the future of our country.
NBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11151353248382760452noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3770972586849775105.post-70656530941225146232007-09-13T09:00:00.000-07:002007-09-13T09:01:53.509-07:00Lets not live in WonderlandLets face the reality that the so called wonderland of technology that we have built in our schools is far away from utopia. This wonderland is a false land of promise that we have created to misguide ourselves. This wonderland is no more than a bunch of latest machines/ computers that we have assembled and connected ti bring in this feeling of euphoria. Lets face it that this euphoria is very short libed and is not doing any good to our education process. Neither the teachers nor the students would benefit in the long run. The wonderland cannot just rest on a bed of state-of-art technology. Lets open this wonderland to the ultimate crusaders of education i.e. teachers. How long would be keep teachers away from tools that could tranform their teaching-learning and make it more effective. Lets be just and to the needs of a teacher and give them all the tools and aids that could help them deliver better. A teacher comfortable with the latest trends in E.T. ( Educational Technology) can really do wonders provided we give them proper and timely exposure to these e-tools. The curriculum will ever remain comprehensive, the examination will ever put the same demands and expectations on the teachers. Let us help and motivate the teachers to take the first step towards e-empowerment and make the future of our children better and brighter. Lets transform this wonderland into a wonderful land of opportunities for teachers and enable them enhance the teaching-learning process.NBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11151353248382760452noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3770972586849775105.post-10461385674845594062007-09-13T08:57:00.000-07:002007-09-13T09:00:28.955-07:00Professionalising EducationWe keep talking about professionalising our education but it is easier said than done. There are various aspects we need to look at when we think about making the education process more professional. Every stakeholder needs to play a part in the process, be it teacher, parent, student, society, etc. I would just like to share my view on some of the aspects. Professionalism cannot be brought about by merely raising the students' fees, increasing the salary structure of academic staff, adding better infrastructure, etc. Some of the issues that determine a professional approach towards education are :
Society's outlook towards teaching as a profession
Attitude of the teacher, in general
School's vision and approach
I had some experiences in my life during my interactions with school principals, teachers and other stakeholder which really changed my perception about teaching and education. Some of these experiences were really shocking for me and I just could not believe that they were coming from the horse's mouth i.e. teachers and principals.
Firsly, I talk about society's outlook towards teachers/ teaching. The society's perception about teaching is nothing more than just perceiving it as a job to be done from 8 A.M. - 2 P.M. and no extra work/ effort demanded. What we forget while forming our perception about teacher/ teaching is that our children's future are shaper by these teachers only and we cannot treat it as a substitute job to be taken up just to fulfill our personal or family needs.

Secondly, the teachers attitude need to change drastically. If the teachers will keep joining schools to do a 8 - 2 job, will shun adoption of newer ways of teaching-learning, will treat any new techniques/ tools as extra work, will keep talking about their salary structure, we will keep getting the same results using the same methods of teaching-learning. The things would not change as long as the teachers would keep concerned about themselves rather than about a child's learning needs and shaping their future. Let teachers not forget that we are not doing justice to our children in schools if we are not providing them ample food for thought. The demand of the situation is passionate teachers who feel for teaching and do not compromise under any situation/ circumstance.

Thirdly, as long as schools keep compromising on the teaching/ teacher quality, we cannot expect an enhanced teaching-learning process and a better future for our children. The school's rolw is not just to impart education uptil a partcular standard but also to prepare children for future. All this cannot happen if the school does not give a thought to quality of teaching/ teacher. The commercialisation of education is prompting the schools to charge exorbitantly from the students but to recruit unqualified people as teachers because they come at a very low salary. Most of the school's objective is just to recruit teachers to fill the position without giving a thought to the quality that gets delivered through these inequipped teachers. Let us not feed our students with half-baked knowledge and information.

It is indeed a 'vicious circle' where the role of all the three stakeholders mentioned above is equally crucial. Every stakeholder needs to support the effort of the other for transforming the teaching-learning. I can go on and on, relating more of my experiences but saving it for my next posts.NBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11151353248382760452noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3770972586849775105.post-87418061330774018832007-09-12T06:25:00.001-07:002007-09-12T06:27:04.502-07:00Teaching = Passion + EnthusiasmTeaching is considered to be a noble profession and I believe only fortunate ones get this opportunity to become a teacher and mould, transform so many lives for the better. Teaching is not only about knowledge or being vocal (maybe vociferous). There is much more to teaching. Good teaching does not come through by relating/ delivering subject knowledge to the students in a classroom setting. Good teaching has two key ingredients to it - passion and enthusiasm.

Passion would drive a good teacher to teach and relate things to students. The delivery process of the subject matter totally transforms once you put in your passion to it. A teacher is not expected to be just a subject expert but somebody who can really motivate the students as well and really elevate them to a level that teaching becomes a learning experience for the students.

The second key ingredient, Enthusiasm is what makes teaching, a learning experience for the teacher. The enthusiasm is what drives a good teacher to explore and innovate more and deliver more to students.

But passion and ebthusiasm does not come with age, experience, knowledge or degree. These qualities have to come from within. During my interaction with teachers I came across teachers, considered to be senior because of their teaching experience and knowledge but totalli impassionate about teaching. For them, teaching was just an "ought to do" thing and nothing more. That is really a sad tale to relate. As long as we will treat "teaching" as a job, we will keep churning teachers with "ought to teach" attitude.NBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11151353248382760452noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3770972586849775105.post-5846174186398194812007-09-12T06:19:00.000-07:002007-09-12T06:22:23.575-07:00Redefining Teaching"Teaching leads to Learning". This is how the system of education works in our schools. The teacher forms the nucleus of the process of educating the children. Since time immemorial, we have been using methods and tools to make the teaching-learning process. Our thrust/ focus is on improving the learning component in students.

Ever since the technology came into picture, schools and teachers have been trying their best to derive the maxiumum out of it. But, all these efforts get nullified, when we see that all that is getting done/ delivered in the name of technology is the training on the same set of softwares/ tools. Why we are trying to reinvent the wheel is a question to ponder ! Why should we train the teachers in the same set of office suite ( presentation tool) by different agencies. Why are some hell-bent on portraying a tool as de facto teaching tool. There's life for teachers beyond that presentation tool.

Let us not forget that the teacher is the main cog in the wheel of education. The need of the hour is to help/ assist them redefine the teaching-learning process. Let us enable them and empower them with enough technology capabilities that their creativity and innovation transforms the teaching-learning forever. Let the teachers also evolve with times. Let us open more horizons for them to explore and experiment. Let there be limitless boundaries for our teachers and give them the freedom they deserve.NBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11151353248382760452noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3770972586849775105.post-85916598483608416412007-05-20T04:15:00.000-07:002007-05-20T04:20:59.990-07:00Is Technology Integration a fad in schools ?
Dear Friends,

It has been quite a long time since i put a post on my blog. The last three months gave me lot of insight into integrating technology into education, primarily into teaching-learning. My experiences during the past few months have reiterated the fact further that there's still a lot that needs to be done to bring teachers to the computer labs. The first step towards bringing computers in classroom is to bring teachers to computer lab. Computers is still a phobia, even for those who have underwent some training on computers/ technology integration. As long as we do not put teachers in the loop of the technology integration process, we cannot hope to achieve anything. I am highlighting just few of my thoughts ( triggered by my experiences) that have been haunting me for want of a proper solution. Since I firmly believes in being more solution-oriented, so I will put in my suggestions to each of the listed thoughts.

The highly reputed schools have the most technology phobic teachers as they have been accustomed or trained to be dependent on the readymade products and restricted only to use it. This happens mainly due to availability of large amount of funds.

You can manage to bring teachers to computer lab/ computers through force but you cannot make them use technology. The rule of thumb for learning anything new is to try it out, to do it.

The extrinsic motivation is of no avail as long as there's no intrinsic motivation in the teacher.

The teachers need to realise that technology could only act as a catalyst towards achieving/ bringing technology integration in education, the real integration of technology would happen only when teachers actually start using it for fulfilling their needs.

The school management plays a deciding role in facilitating or bottlenecking the technology integration process. Merely providing computers or readymade content, LMS cannot bring in the technology integration. The more the number of ready made tools introduced by the management, the more the teachers get dependent on them and the more techno-phobic they get. Unless, you ask the teachers to actually create or experiment, they just cannot adopt technology.

The teachers need to have an internet identity and the least they could do for that is to create an email id of their own. Let checking email daily become a routine for them.

The teachers really need to understand the purpose of every technology tool offered/ provided to them. Even a simple email id could go a long way in helping them get started with technology facilitated teaching-learning.

The teachers need not get bogged down with the hype surrounding internet, etc. Everyday there would be some terms coined and floated in the market. The teachers just need to remember this that all that these new educational tools would require/ expect from the teacher would be a willingness to try, innovate and experiment. None of the new technologies that crop up every now and then for educators require any extra degree of knowledge apart from being basic computer literate and having an internet identity.

I have just highlighted some of my experiences and would be touching upon few of them in more detail in my next blogs.

Lets not breed the teachers on cooked content but help them understand technology and facilitate their journey to e-teaching
NBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11151353248382760452noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3770972586849775105.post-89213807228663825972007-05-20T04:06:00.000-07:002007-05-20T04:23:52.176-07:00What Motivates Teachers !!

The big question "what would motivate the teachers positively?" had been bugging me for so long till the thought of launching e-awards for Shiksha India was put to table. The idea of giving awards was nothing new or different from what many others did/ were doing but what was unique about the idea was to make it a platform to give reward and award to the deserving ones. The initial thought led us to decide that the best motivation we could provide to the teachers and schools was in terms of financial reward and trophy of recognition. We were really fortunate that the President agreed to be the Chief Guest for the programme and present the award to the winners. January 12th, 2007 saw the first e-awards presentation ceremony held in New Delhi and none other than the honourable President of India, Dr. Abdul Kalam blessed us by coming. His mere presence in the hall was enough to spell bind the entire audience and once he gave his address, the entire audience got captivated by his sheer genius, intelligence and charm. So engrossed were the audience in his words that he made the teachers take a 11-point oath. I am very much sure that for everybody present there in the hall, it was a lifetime experience watching the President from such close quarters and a dream come true for those who had the fortune of receiving the awards from the President. I too had my share of good fortune when I got the opportunity to assist the President in launching an e-learning collaborative portal for teachers. I think it was not as much to do with the cash prize ot the trophy received by the winners that brought the shine in their eyes but the sheer realisation that they were recieving it by the hands of a great personality and a great soul. This realisation, by itself must have instilled in them a feeling of doing better and better. Also, all those who missed out on the award did feel bad but the greatest award and reward for them is the opportunity to be with the President in the same hall for an hour or so. I take pride in the fact that we took the first step right in out endeavour to provide the right motivation and impetus to the teachers, principals and our other partners in this ever continuing journey of delivering our best to the cause of education. Handholding the teachers is required : We should take a cue from the way a child learns. A child requires minimum handholding and learns maily through self-exploration . The child just need to be told the basics of something and rest they catch up themselves. Similarly, for teachers new to computers, handholding is definitely required but to the extent that they get started with it but you cannot be holding them through the entire technology integration process. At some time, the teacher will have to take a dive on his/ her own and the sooner, the better. Technology is not about learning a software, a product or a sequence of steps but is more about creating a mind set and that is what the purpose of the handholding should be. One can teach the basics of technology to the teachers and help them get comfortable with using it and that is where it should be left as far as handholding teachers is concerned. The self-exploration by the teachers thereafter would lead them on the road to technology integration and would open before them a world full of opportunities to be seized and utilised for the benfit of self and others as well.5. Teachers need to learn a lot of programming and other technology stuff : It is a wrong notion that teachers need to learn of technology stuff to start integrating technology in their teaching-learning. In fact the very essence of technology integration is to help and make it easier for teachers to use technology for their teaching-learning. Technology Integration has more to do with making a shift from I.T. ( Information Teachnology ) to E.T. ( Educational Technology) . Teachers need to get comfortable at using and utilising tools pertaining to their domain rather than tools pertaining to I.T. By exposing the teachers to technology integration, the idea is to create a mindset in teachers that teachnology is available for everybody to be utilised and to enable them to pick and choose tools as per their requirement and from their domain.6. Technology Integration means to be able to use the readymade CDs : Technology Integration is being able to implement Educational Technology. Educational Technology has different categories of tools that enable the teachers to get started with the task of using technology and usign ready made CDs is just one of those. Using readymade CDs could be a starting point for the teachers on their road to multimedia based learning and could then lead them to higher levels of using technology for education. Any technology should just be a tool at the hands of teacher and it should help the teacher attain better efficiency and productivity in their academic and non-academic tasks.I have tried to put forth some very crucial reasons sighted by managment and teachers for not being able to take up the task of technology integration. I would continue to write about more such reasons simply to share with all and to ensure that every reader becomes conscious about it and tries to find solutions to it.
NBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11151353248382760452noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3770972586849775105.post-46303561519005127222007-05-20T04:05:00.001-07:002007-05-20T04:05:43.822-07:00Some Inexplicable Reasons for Desisting from Technology Integration, Part - 1
Its really sad to hear some real lame excuses (if i may call it so) from some stakeholders in education for not trying enough to integrate technology in education. What they quote at times are more like excuses rather than reasons for not taking up the Technology Integration seriously. I am just jotting few of these and trying to find logic/ reasoning behind the reasons. So, here are some of them :1. Teachers don't have time : Everybody in this world is as busy as anybody else. To say that teachers don't have time for technology integration is totally unjustifies and uncalled for. My reasoning is that why should we burden teachers with so much of non-academic work which in no way would help the actual task expected of the teachers i.e. teaching-learning process. Secondly, for learning anything new a person has to stretch - take that extra step or go that extra mile. Technology, for sure, is an aid for teachers and is bound to improve their efficiency and make teaching-learning more effective but the onus totally lies on the teachers to treat technology as a friend and not as a foe. Its rightly said that "technology is a very good slave but a very bad master" and that is where we, as teachers falters by letting technology dictate us the terms. As teachers, we are all experts in our domains and know our subjects well. So, why not mould the available technologies to our advantage and benefit. Here, i would like to say that the school management has a very crucial role to play in how technology integration is portrayed to the teachers. There are times, when the integration process is taken up half-heartedly becuase there is some pressure for that. Unless and until the management is convinced about the role of technology in education, nothing would happen, in actual. The actual integration happens only when it is made a part of the teaching-learning process and not as a separate process in itself.2. Teachers are Novice: Its not only the teachers but all of us who fall in the category of novice when we set about to learn something new or different. Any new learning happens through "knowledge and skills" way. By K&S way I mean that firstly the knowledge needs to be imparted to the teacher or gained by the teachers and then comes the task of getting comfortable with the technology component by getting skilled at it through constant practice. The initial glitches would only lead to getting rid of the hitches, so don't be afraid of committing mistakes. The point i am putting across is that how long would you get away with the excuse that teachers are novice. Unless you make it mandatory for them to take up technology for some of their academic or non-academic tasks and also give them ample of time to work on the machines and make mistakes, they will ever remain novices and the integration of technology will never happen.3. When teachers find it difficult to learn computers, how can they encourage children for the same : It is very aptly said that "Child is the father of man" and the learning that a child can deliver to adults no adult can manage to impart it to children. Rather than worrying about, how can i teach children to use technology or computers, we should be concerned about how best i can put my ideas and thoughts across to children using a particular component. Anyway, subject teachers are not expected to impart technology education to children. Children have their own unique way of learning things, technology much much faster than adults. Rather the teachers should not hesitate to take a tip or two from the students to improve themselves.
NBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11151353248382760452noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3770972586849775105.post-69707732648662676312007-05-20T04:02:00.000-07:002007-05-20T04:03:44.592-07:00What ails Technology Integration in Schools ?
"When does the actual Technology Integration happens in schools ?" is a perennial question and there is no satisfying answer(at least to my knowledge). But we should not get bogged down by this. The main issue is not when do we say that schools have successfully integrated technology but whether they have started on the path or not. The disparity among schools in terms of resources, access, initiative, need, motivation, etc. leads to the conclusion that no standard benchmarks could be setup for technology integration. There are schools who may have ample of resources and hand but a lack of vision and effort has pushed them at the back in the race of technology integration. The schools may add technology resources like computers, etc. and call themselves techno-savvy but the fact remains that building computer labs doesn't ensure their usage and effective utilisation. The need of the hour is to move from a state of being "techno-savvy" to being "techno-smarty" where the focus and effort should be on appropriately utilising the existing resources. There are many things that ails the technology integration process - the mindset of the schools, the curriculum pressure, the initial effort required, the general misconception that tehcnology integration is a costly affair, lack of proper vision and of course the unwillingness to change. Somehow the schools seem to have a general notion that the traditional manual methods are the best as they have been doing it for so many years now. This feeling or understanding does not at all stand them in good stead as they clearly miss out on the fact that technology can definitely bring in more efficiency and effectiveness and can lead to more productivity among the school staff. A research has clearly pointed out that 40 % of the tteachers' time is spent on doing things not directly related to their main task i.e. teachhing-learning process. It is here that technology can play a very crucial role and can help teachers automate their academic and non-academic task and make them more productive and more focused. So, technology integration seems more like a matter of individual choice based on priority and vision.
NBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11151353248382760452noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3770972586849775105.post-39582467077286403722007-05-20T03:23:00.000-07:002007-05-20T03:25:31.287-07:00Understanding ICT Integration
All of those involved with education in one way or the other have been talking about using ICT for education without giving a thought to the purpose behind doing it. The reason for doins so is clear to all, because others are doing it so we must also catch up with them.Without pondering over what we want to achieve through ICT , we have jumped to join the bandwagon. This senseless hurry to use ICT in education is not doing any good to the education system. Just about everybody has resorted to instaling computers, buying some CDs and then call it ICT integration. We really need to analyse whether bundling some hardware and some software leads to the integration. We are not sure why we want to use ICT- whether for imparting ICT literacy knowleged or for imparting ICT facilitated literacy/education. The issues are enormous and i am just highlighting a few of those

Who is out target audience- students, teachers or both ?

What should we teach- I.T. or I.T. facilitated/enabled ?

What should be the ICT curriculum be like ?

I have just touched the tip of the iceberg and know for sure that if we open the Pandora Box, it would be total chaos and confusion. I think its time that we sit and ponder to use ICT more judiciously in oue education.

NarinderNBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11151353248382760452noreply@blogger.com0
